Update!

Hey guys, wow it's been a while since I posted! Here's some stuff I did during school/more recently:

This guy ate up my life for 5 months, but it was totally worth it! I had a wonderful time and learned quite a bit.

Good all Life Drawing :)

and of course no post would be complete without...

Some monster Designs!
If anyone wants to comment on the "readability" of these 2 designs that would be awesome. Say for example you find it hard to understand whats connecting where: Let me know please!

I won't be posting again probably until boxing day so I hope everyone has a great holiday.

Woot Long Weekend!

Hopefully I won't always need a long weekend to produce some personal work! Here's a couple:

Goblins and explosives. They're a match made in heave... hell. This guy was kinda impulsive, I threw down a bunch of thumb nails and just ran with the idea trying to push things.

This guy was a bit more methodical. I knew I wanted this pose it was just a matter of how much to push it. To get a better feel for what was happening I took the pose myself, took a picture, then drew from it. Eventually I got something I liked.

Obden Jur

Obden Jur,
God of Anarchy and Destruction

The idea for this being came from my friend Gab who is currently running a table top rpg that I am a part of. It takes place in a 1800 Steampunk Universe where anything from having a polite dinner conversation at a noble's house to killing green blooded crab human mutant with tendrils of darkness can happen. Suffice to say Gab has an extraordinary imagination that results in me leaving each session overcharged with inspiration and ideas. Thanks Gab.

Now upon leaving one of these sessions the party and I had just gotten a detailed description of the force we are all working against: Obden Jur. Here is Gab's description.

Obden Jur is a malevolence made real. His description varies from source to source. What's key to the description is that 'he' is of monstrous proportions, with three triangular, snapping maw that emits green light. He has no discernible head, nor eyes, nor ears. Some stories have described him as having a thousand spindly arms

I decided to go with a theme of "threes" mouths, arms, legs, etc... In this pose in particular I was trying to show how he would whirl around haphazardly destroying all in his path. Above all I found the challenge of creating Obden Jur's anatomical structure most difficult and exciting. I hope to eventually place him in a full illustration depicting his power once I find a design I am satisfied with. Comments and Critiques are always welcome!!!

Bottom Line September 23rd

I was experimenting with the "envelope" method Alan Stewart introduced me to. Before you start drawing the figure you essential trap it inside the shape it roughly represents. It's pretty neat because it gives you a good sense of where the models forms are in space and forces you to think of the body as a whole which is so important!

Deadly Sin Number Three: Greed

Greed was once a man that desired unparalleled wealth and power.  His insatiable need to gain these eventually led him to make a deal with the Devil.

He soon grew into something that every man and woman would not hesitate to surrender their gold and authority to. As payment for this "power" the Devil ripped Greed's hands from his body and wrapped them around him, cauterizing the stubs of his arm with molten treasures. "Now Greed," he said "you may collect all the treasures of this world, but never have the capability of delighting in it."

Forsaken

Monsters have feelings too and today I'm trying to show that.

The Gorgon Medusa was forever cursed to turn whomever she looked upon into stone. And although most of the time she's a fierce temple guardian who silences all that dare to enter, I'm sure their are times when she must feel horribly alone (not counting when her sisters are around.) In this drawing I tried to capture one of those times.

Medusa is posed with one of the men she stopped from entering her tomb. Although his expression is the one he wore at the time of gazing upon Medusa and turning into stone, she looks past that and imagines life as it could have been if she were not cursed. To sell this feeling I tried to give her an expression of sorrowful wonder as well as have her left hand gently stroking the mans forehead. To show the passage of time I had his armed hand partly crumble and fall to the ground. I also decided to keep the snake heads all tame. If one had look decidedly ready to strike with jaws wide it would have likely confused the moment.

Oh and I had to scan it half by half then put it together again, so sorry about the funny shade in the top left! Let me know what you think!

Champion.

Really felt like watching gladiator this weekend!

I drew the helmet literally 15 times to try and make it seem like he was looking up.

Changing it up

I've been drawing a lot of men recently (yes I know that sounds strange) so I decided I do a little counter-balancing this weekend. Let me know what you think!

Decided to draw an animal with my day off/ found a nice running progression of a lioness:

also playing around with hatching a bit. Leave comments and crits below!

Bowmen

Heres a 4 hour study I just finished recently:

So my two overall goals with this one were to 1) Work on my shading consistency and 2) To do a pelvis  bone study. Holy crap is that thing confusing. Anyway it kinda ended up a little funky, next time I'm probably going to re-draw the pelvis area on a seprate piece of paper instead of trying to work it into the actual pose. There are also a few other things that still need work.

Celebrating with da Boys

This ones a keeper ;)

Anatomy Study

This was something one of my teachers recommended doing over the summer. So the initial pose I drew from a live model. Then the next day I drew it again, but this time with an anatomy book open next to me. Study took me two hours, theres definitely a few things that could be tweaked.

Gluttony has escaped from Hell!!!!

During the school year a drew an incarnation of Envy, one of the seven deadly sins, so today I figured I'd draw one of her brothers. Introducing: Gluttony, the Insatiable.

Yup, he's here and more hungry than ever. At first I had him posing with a scythe, but decided that a dinner fork was much more appropriate. Decided to keep this one rough because I liked the energy. Let me know what you think!!

shtuff

Got some monsters and figure drawing here, really trying to work on my shading cause it aint the snaziest thing around town right now.

Got the idea for this pose from a Discovery channel T-rex

Smile!

So one of the bajillion things I need to practice how to draw are faces. Up until very recently I've usually avoided the face unless it had a snout and rows of spiky teeth. Today I decided to throw myself in the fire.
As subjects I used three of my close friends. After that it wasn't to hard to find inspiration as they are all very supportive of my artwork and lovely people (except after to much tequila, then their amazing)!
I spent around 1 hour per portrait, and learned a bunch of things as I went. Although I believe I managed to snag a bit of a likeness for each of them (woot!) there are still a whole whack of issues that leave me feeling unsatisfied with the outcome.  All and all it was a good learning experience and I look forward to trying it again in the future. Thanks for involuntarily helping girls!

Update

It's been a while! Heres what I've been doing:
and some more life drawing shtuf:
I gotta pump out a monster ounce and a while or I just don't feel right. Don't really have a name for this cute guy, but he was a blast to draw.

Tuesday 24 May 2011

Priest of the Plague

They say it's a "dyeing" religion. Ba-doom chi. So this guy was a lot of fun to draw, but kinda frustrating to come up with. I think it took me something like 3 hours of laying around, beating my head against the wall and going out for a long walk to come up with this guy. In the end though it was worth it! Let me know what ya think!

Hippo Warrior

Hey guys, heres something a did a couple days ago. Not super satisfied with how it turned out, but it was a fun learning experience.
Let me know what you like and what you don't like!

Monday 16 May 2011

Hip Hip Hippo!

Alright today I had some time on my hands so I decided to do a few hippo studies as well as quick gestures. Check it out:
Also, while I was on the hunt for photo reference I came across the fallowing image. It's not my work, but it sure is inspiring and hilarious.

Carnivorous Tree Redesign

After showing several people the carnivorous tree I found it wasn't reading well enough as an actual tree. I asked one of my friends what he would have done differently and he offered some very helpful advice. This is what it ended up looking like:

Carnivorous Tree

This things bark is worse than it's bite ;)
Let me know what you think! And I posted a bit of my thought process for those that are curious:
These are some of the quick sketches I do until I get a better idea of what I want to draw.
